Building a Resume and a Career

There is one piece of advice that I dispense often, “It is not about this job but the next one.” And while I sometimes feel trite repeating myself, I must say, it is savvy advice. Careful planning and consideration before Resumeeach job change is critical. This is where a knowledgeable management recruiter can be an asset. A recruiter with experience in the industry should be able to give you insight into a company and position. Why is this important? Accepting the right positions and joining the right organizations will allow you to have better opportunities in the future.

There are several things that can sometimes work against a solid candidate and make him or her virtually unmarketable. The first is experience with companies that have a poor reputation or no reputation at all. This is too much of an unknown for a prospective employer. The second is a candidate that has been with one company for an extended period without any promotions. Lastly, and probably the biggest negative to an employer is frequent job changes. Taking a new position every year or two reflects instability. Companies want to know that you are going to be dedicated to their organization and committed to staying in the position. After all, you are an investment for them. They are taking time and resources to bring you aboard and train you.

Now that you know the pitfalls let’s talk about those things that will make your resume shine. First, stability with solid, recognized companies. Two, a clear list of achievements in each position. Third, solid references from previous supervisors. Lastly, a clear progression into higher level positions as you progress in your career.

If you make careful decisions about the positions that you accept and the path you take, opportunities in the career school industry will be endless. Let us help you get things moving in the right direction.
