Top Ten Tips for the New Year!

  1. Think carefully about your needs before initiating a search. Look at your long term goals as well as your short term needs?

  2. Have a concrete sketch of the job qualifications and description? Qualifications may include a degree, specific training or certification, on-the-job experience, years of experience and experience with a particular type of school, to name a few. For example, do you need an admissions manager that can oversee high school in-home recruiting? That is a unique skill set that not every DOA is going to be able to offer.

  3. When looking at a candidate think carefully about how he/she might be able to serve you over the long haul. Are the candidate’s long term career goals in line with your company’s objectives?

  4. What type of salary are you going to be able to offer? Is there some flexibility in what you can put forward? How does your salary range compare with other companies in the industry? A competitive compensation package allows you to reach the most desirable candidates.

  5. We recommend at least one initial telephone interview before incurring the cost and time commitment of a face to face interview.

  6. Schedule a face to face interview at a time and location where the prospective employee can meet several people that would work in a supervisory or collaborative relationship with the individual.

  7. Offer any literature or other materials that may give prospective candidates an opportunity to learn about your organization. If possible, provide this information prior to the interview.

  8. After an interview, whether phone or face to face, keep your recruiting firm up-to-date on your progress. If your recruiting firm is in tune with your progress they can be of a lot more assistance. You may get additional insights from the recruiter on the candidate’s thoughts and feelings as he/she works through the interview process.

  9. Be prepared to interview and respond in a timely manner. Good candidates will not be on the market for a long time.

  10. Your employees are the nuts and bolts of your operation. Invest the time and money needed to ensure that you have the very best.
